3 Form - Reclaim
19Jun07

3 Form is a bit of an enigma for Utah. Their factory is just down the road a couple of miles from where I live. While most people around here have never even heard of them, they are known world wide for making some of the most beautiful paneling available. They are also an eco friendly company making it into the AIA top ten green building products. While I adore their stuff, it seems like it has always been too expensive for a tightwad like me. I was looking over their site last night drooling over some of their designs, and playing with the design your own panels when I noticed the Reclaim section. Basically the reclaim panels are 4′ x 4′ panels that are cut out of a bigger panel that had flaws. Instead of throwing it all away, they sell the smaller panels for a discount. Most go for around $200, and considering I paid $95 for a 5′ x 5′ panel of 3/8″ baltic birch, is really not too bad at all.

Just curious, why did you pay $95 for 3/8 baltic birch? That’s about a $25-30 piece of wood.
I love the 3Form, but the price is just out of control. I did see some used as a sort of deck screen/enclosure on a house once, but there’s a reason you almost exclusively see it used in commercial projects.
Scott, thanks for the correction. I think the sheet I paid like $90 for was a 3/4″ baltic birch. It may have been a little less than that, but it’s not cheap.
5X5 18mm should cost around $30 at a good vendor. (even at single sheet qty orders)
btw, i just got a job that will take a 1″ X 48″ X 96″ piece of moss chroma… cost with shipping will be around $1500!!! the good part is that i will get the “drops” from the 4×8 for my own use. cool stuff if you can swing it. i love working with it.

Here’s a great example of a 3 Form residential installation:

Just cycle through for more pics. I spoke to the owner and it carried a hefty price tag, but it creates an amazing space with beautiful light quality.
Ahhhh man, I just came across your old posting on 3-form. Wish I saw it sooner. I just bit the bullet and bought a sheet of 3-form chroma for two vanity tops. Yes, I know it was big money, but it’ll be for two different bathrooms, so it’ll work out nicely. Anyway, I’m glad you told me about he scraps for other projects. I’ll be sure to check it out.
i’ve been trying to get a job at 3form for a few months now. unfortunately i haven’t gotten my foot in yet. the reclaim concept as i understand it is eventually supposed to extend to those consumers who already have 3form panels and want to reconfigure their space or put in a different 3form product or damaged part of a panel, etc. the idea is that 3form will take the panels back to recycle and/or redistribute. it’s a cool idea, which will hopefully take fruition once the product has been around long enough for people to replace or whatever…
Hey GRM readers,
I just emailed Creede about this over the weekend, but for the rest of the readers, I am selling some of these 3Form pieces on cl.com. Here’s a link to the post:

Contact me via the listing if anyone is interested! I’d love for them to go to someone who will appreciate them, and I’m open to reasonable offers.
Thanks!
